Overview

Sara Umga & Animal Pass
It was once again Korean Way Project for which we organized a wonderful trekking program in inner Tosh Valley under two mighty Himalayan peaks Dharamsura, the while sail and Papsura. Tosh is a small village at the top of Parvati range which has few houses, small hotels and small restaurants serving to the trekkers and climbers to upper regions. After three days trek from Tosh, we reach base camp of these twin peaks and a day’s trek to Animal Pass and back to Kuta Thatch base camp is not less rewarding at all. Animal pass offers panoramic views of these peaks and valleys to both sides and a high altitude lake on the way. After the Animal Pass trekking expedition, we move towards Sara Umga Pass, which is the wall in between Tosh Valley and Lahul Valley. The traversing day is long and tough through glaciers and fresh snow some times as we experienced with this Korean group. We get down to Futi Runi which was a meeting point of traders in ancient times and cross a bridge to reach to road on next side. The bridge was built by British company that used to collect metal from this region of Shigri Glaciers to make guns till second world war. We take the vehicle from other side on the river called Chota Dara and drive to Manali.

Package Itinerary
  • Day 1Arrive Delhi, drive to hotel with our office representative.
    Himachal Pradesh
  • Day 2Delhi- Mandi drive

Mandi is an ancient town of Himachal Pradesh which is known as Little Varanasi because of plentiful of temples here. It is 102 Kms short to Manali and a perfect venue to break the long journey on Delhi- Manali highway.

  • Day 3Mandi to Tosh drive (80 Kms).

Morning we visit a popular Hindu temple named Trilokinath at Mandi and drive to Tosh village from where we start our trekking.

  • Day 4Tosh to Kutla (2800 M) trek (3 hours trek) plus 30 minutes for Budhaban

From Tosh we can start late after having checking of all equipment, food items and staff. We can hire ponies from Tosh in summers but for the early months of year, we can hire porters. The trek from Tosh to Kutla (which is again a small village with one rest house) is very nice through pine trees and waterfalls. You can see the snow covered mountain cliffs in the background during the trek. We can stay in the rest house or we can use our tents too for this night. Budhaban is just 30 minutes more walk from Kulta, till Kutla (local pronounce it basically Kotla), there are guest houses on the way. Juniper, Maple and Cedar trees contribute to the vegetation of this region.

  • Day 5Kutla to Saran Thatch (3400 M) - 12 Kms
  • Day 6Saran to Samsi Thach (3750 M) - 12 Kms
  • Day 7Samsi Thach to Kuta Thach /Base Camp (4200 M)

It takes about 4 hours to cover this distance of about 7 Kms on the right side of River Tosh. We trek towards the Tosh Glacier crossing through a cold stream. The base camp is a meadow and beautiful area in deed again beside a stream. During summers, shepherds do meet with their flocks in this BC area. The ponies or porters will leave the team here. Here we find some stone erected of two climbers Malabi Das from Indian and Roger Redmayne from New Zealand who died while climbing Papsura in different years.

  • Day 8Trek to Animal Pass and back to Kuta Thach base camp

If you are interested to see a beautiful lake surrounded by high peaks above Tosh Glacier, you can always enjoy this extra day. Once you trek upwards, you reach Animal Pass which offers you the wonderful view of Devachen Peak, Dharamsura Peak, Papsura Peak and back side of Deo Tibba peak. An extremely beautiful lake is the rewards of this days trek. Chander has trekked to Animal Pass few years ago and the details are available on Google too.
