Overview

We have long experience of cycling on this route since 1999 and we are cycling every year on this most popular cycling route on world.  Organizing CTC Cycle Expeditions and Red Spokes cycle tours on this route for years added our experience on this route. We must acknowledge KZ Journeys of Italy and several other individuals who remained our clients in past.

Manali- Leh cycle tour

This bike tour crosses 4 high mountain passes and the journey of 485 Kms is covered with 8 camps in extremely scenic places. The journey under the Himalayan ranges is fascinating and the solitude offers best way to interact with this beauty of shining mountains. Our last climb to Khardung La, the highest motorable pass of the world from Leh gives the ultimate reward of the expedition. Leh, the capital of Ladakh which is known as the land of high passes or roof top of the world is a beautiful town at 3600 Meters where we spend 3 days to rest and explore.  It’s situated on the banks of the Indus between the two highest mountain ranges in the world, the Karakoram to the north and mighty Himalayas to the south.

Package Itinerary
  • Day 1Arrive Manali
    Himachal Pradesh

As we arrive at Manali, our first day requires us to get familiar with our bikes. We carry on a small cycling tour in the local areas of the town. This is mainly done to acclimatise ourselves to the environment. We spend the night in a hotel.

  • Day 2Manali - Marhi- 36 Kms
    Himachal Pradesh

Starting from Manali, we begin our expedition. Our first ascent will be just a "warm-up", for what lies ahead. The route takes us through a set of hairpin bends that run past deodar and pine forests. We camp at Marhi for the night.

  • Day 3Marhi - Keylong -74 Kms
    Himachal Pradesh

Today we start our 12 kms ascent to the renowned Rohtang Pass, offering us perfect views of the panoramic snow covered peaks. After this, we descend to Gramphu, where we meet stretches of flat road while we cross the rapid waters of the river at Khoksar. Our ride then leads us to Sissu, which is at the base of the Pir Panjal range. From here, Keylong is a short ride away, and we cross mountain streams on our way. We spend the night in a camp.

  • Day 4Keylong - Patseo- 48 Kms
    Himachal Pradesh

We begin our ride to Patseo on a rugged road. As we pass the Jispa Village, the terrain gets arid. Our ride from here is a short downhill before we ascend to Patseo.

Here, we will see barely any habitation, maybe just a few sheep grazing as we enter the Lama territory. On the horizon, we will observe the mesmerising skyline of the higher Himalayan ranges. We spend the night camping.

  • Day 5Patseo - Sarchu - 58 Kms
    Himachal Pradesh

Our ride today takes us through a steep ascent to the Baralacha La Pass. As we cycle through the pass, we will observe that the terrain has no vegetation and the mountains are covered with only rocks and loose stones. However, this is an experience in itself.

After crossing the pass, we descend into the gorge like area of Bharatpur, which requires us to cross mountain rivers. We spend the night camping.

  • Day 6Sarchu - Whiskey Nullah - 56 Kms
    Ladakh Himalaya

Our cycling journey continues with an easy climb, but soon we face the challenging route of 21 zigzag hairpin bends of Gata that take us up to 15,302 feet!

Only once we pass the Gata loops, will we arrive at Nakeela Pass. This is where our route takes a downhill ride all the way to Whiskey Nullah. You will experience beautiful and dry mountain landscapes along the way. We camp here overnight.

  • Day 7Whisky Nalla- Moray Plains to Debring over Lachalung La & Tanglang La (5328m) - 82 Kms
    Ladakh Himalaya

Morning we are set for ascending the second highest pass on the Manali-Leh highway up to Lachalung La. The road here is likely to be the worst of the trip with a distinct lack of tarmac, it's very gravelly and there are many loose stones. We have a long descent to Pang down a steep sided gorge followed by an 8 Kms switchback climb before reaching the flat top of the Moray Plains. This barren area is known for its extreme temperatures in the morning and evening, fast winds and sandstorms. The only sign of life is the hardy Nomadic Changpas who can be seen tending their yaks in this most desolate place. We camp at Debring 20 Kms below the world's second highest pass, the Tanglang La.

  • Day 8Dabring - Rumtse - 51 Kms
    Ladakh Himalaya

Our ride can be challenging as we begin our climb to Tanglang La. This long climb starts gradually and then gets steeper as we reach the top. Once you reach there, you will realize that you will be at 5,360 metres above sea level! This is the second highest motorable route in India! We are rewarded with majestic views of the great Himalayan and the Karakorum Mountains. After this exhilarating ride, we cycle down 1,200 metres of switchbacks to reach the village of Rumtse. We camp here overnight.

  • Day 9Rumtse - Leh - 91 Kms
    Ladakh Himalaya

What we have today is an easy descent to Upshi. While cycling you will realise that the scenery changes drastically. We are now greeted by green landscapes and valleys with small fields and villages. The beauty of this is enhanced with the red mountains that you will encounter. As our route joins the Indus Valley, the road gets better all the way to Leh. Our ride then becomes easy as we pass the Chortens Garden and Thiksey Gompa right before Leh. We spend the night in Leh.

  • Day 10Full day rest in Leh
    Ladakh Himalaya

We rest for the day with some important sight seeing of monasteries and markets
