Overview

This road is known as “one of the most dangerous roads in the world” because of its narrowness, rough and rocky surface for several miles at single stretch, uncertain road blocks, possibilities of rock falling and cliffhanging position where one can see River Chanderbhaga (Chenab) flowing thousands of feet down surely creating a genuine fear.

Package Itinerary
  • Day 1Delhi- Pathankot transfer
    Himachal Pradesh

We take overnight train to reach Pathankot from Delhi.

  • Day 2Pathankot to Chamba, 120 Kms.

We reach Pathankot in the morning and check into a hotel for wash and change. You will get your motorcycles in this hotel and after getting technical descriptions and traffic rules, we ride to Chamba, a beautiful Himalayan town.

  • Day 3Chamba to Bairagarh (2800 m), 90 Kms.

Bairagarh is the outer region of Chamba, a part of Tissa Tehsil which is our destination of the day. We stop at Tissa on the way and move about 27 Kms more further to reach Bairagarh. The journey is scenic and at some stretches landslides can be observed especially during the rainy season. Bairagarh village is the last big village on approach to Sach Pass that connects Chamba with Pangi Valley along Chander Bhaga River. Shepherds reach Bairagarh crossing Cheni Pass from Pangi region for ancient times and the tradition is still in practice along with the special rituals related to the local deities. We stop at a guest house in Bairagarh for the night.

  • Day 4Bairagarh to Killar over Sach Pass (4420m), 76 Kms.

Morning we start to Killar crossing Sach Pass, considering that this route is also listed in the world’s most dangerous roads. We drive about 19 Kms and reach another beautiful hamlet called Satrundi which is not only scenic but a base for some popular trekking routes. The route is steep and rocky, fast flowing streams coming down from the hilltops add nightmare but the scenic beauty all around is truly compelling. The road from Bairagarh to Satrundi passes through a dense forest of deodar which is called “black forest” due to the thickness of trees whereas the several wildflowers are visible all around the way. About 14 Kms uphill drive takes us to Sach Pass where the forest disappear and finally even the alpine grasses also move out of sight replacing boulders and snow most of the times at top. The Sach Pass top has a small temple and a small tea shop for the travelers to worship and have a hot cup of tea. We drive down now on the other side of Sach Pass through Bagotu and reach Killar, our destination of the day.

  • Day 5Killar to Kishtwar. 114 Kms through cliffhanging creating it world’s most dangerous road.

We make an early move from Killar and after few kilometers we leave the road that moves to Sach Pass and continue driving straight. The drive is all along Chander Bhaga River (Chenab) which is visible in a deep and narrow gorge most of the way till Kishtwar. After few kilometers we reach the first village Luj which is a cluster of four small villages and we make our next stop at a police check post to register our vehicles on desolate roadside. After construction of Sach Pass, the frequency of vehicles has decreased drastically on this road. Moving through a thick forest we reach Sansari Nalla on the banks of Chander Bhaga River (Chenab). After Sansari Nalla, we face rocky steep ascent with dusty hairpin bends where our machines need to utilize really good power. The steep rocky ascent ends at the fist village of Jammu & Kashmir on this side named, Ishtiyari. We stop here for a tea break before we enter into about fifteen kilometers cliffhanging till another village Tiari. The road is carved from the middle of huge cliffs after blasting these and Chander Bhaga River flows extremely deep down in a gorge. The distance is less but the road is extremely challenging in all manners so we take remarkably much time to reach Tiari, where a cup of tea is nothing less than a reward. Gulabgarh is 20 kilometers from here which looks like a big town with hotels, restaurants, mosques and monasteries; we don’t stop here but continue to Kishtwar, another 70 Kms drive.

  • Day 6Kishtwar to Jammu. 215 Kms

Covering Doda, Udhampur and Chenani Nashri Tunnel we reach Jammu.
