Overview

MT. KEDAR DOME

In 2012, we organized our first ski + climbing expedition to Kedar Dome peak for Italian ladies group led by Monica Bez in September- October season and the expedition remained very successful. Our next Kedar Dome Ski expedition for an Austrian team of extremely dedicated climbers and skiers was in May- June 2015. This team was also having a lady named Sissi Wutte. Apart from these two expeditions, we have operated few more expeditions to Kedar Dome Peak in past but we are pleased to dedicate this page to these two great ladies .

Ms. Monica Bez. & Ms. Sissi Wutte

Kedar Dome (6831 M) is a mountain peak in the Gangotri Group of peaks in the western Garwhal Himalaya. Kedar Dome lies on a spur projecting towards the Gangotri glacier, two kilometers northwest of Kedarnath. It is located in the state of Uttrakhand 15 kilometers south of the holy site of Gaumukh- the source of the Bhagirathi River. Kedarnath is the highest peak on the south side of the Gangotri Glacier, and Kedar Dome is the third highest. Both peaks have relatively easy routes on their northwest sides, but the east face of Kedar Dome is a large, very difficult rock climb. We reach to Rishikesh and further to Gangotri from where we trek to Tapovan. Kedar Dome Base Camp is called Khara Patthar and is located at 16,000 feet. The trek is not long and the elevation gain is not great, but the air becomes noticeably thinner. Kedarnath and Kedar Dome were first climbed together, in 1947, by a Swiss team led by André Roch. Their route on Kedar Dome, the northwest flank, is still the standard route; it is straightforward and relatively low-angle, and is a popular ski ascent in the spring season.

Morning at the camp site is most rewarding views of facing Bhagirathi group of peaks which provides a complete satisfaction to the mind. We start the first half of trek to Gomukh which is the source of holy and mighty Ganges. This place from where water of Ganges appear is called 'Gomukh', because in the distant past, it probably appeared like a cow's mouth. It’s a great treat for the eye and an enjoyment in itself to stare at the flowing Ganga and the glacier of Gangotri. This is about 3 Kms trek from the Bhojbasa and we have some good time to explore the surroundings before we proceed to Tapovan which we call the second half of the trek, it is steep and as we climb, the view of the surrounding peaks becomes clearer. Tapovan is known for its beautiful meadows that encircle the base camp of the Shivling peak and the bubbling streams, wildflowers and beautiful campsites suddenly invite the trekkers to stop and stay.
