Overview

Mr. Daniel Mayer- We first met this gentleman in 1995 when he visited our office demanding for a Spiti jeep safari tour. He was visiting India for 22nd time so one can imagine his passion for this country. Further in 2008, he wanted to move on Kilar- Sach Pass- Kishtwar trip. For us this was the winter escape for local people of Lahul valley when normal roads are closed to reach Manali or other parts of the country. Quickly we conducted a reconnaissance trip and after some time we organized our first 4WD exploratory trip on this route. It was shocking to know his sudden demise in 2016. He was a great traveler.

Cliff Hanging Route

This road is known as “one of the most dangerous roads in the world” because of its narrowness, rough and rocky surface for several miles at single stretch, uncertain road blocks, possibilities of rock falling and cliffhanging position where one can see River Chanderbhaga (Chenab) flowing thousands of feet down surely creating a genuine fear.

We start from Manali and enter into Lahaul Valley, then drive on the banks of Chanderbhaga (Chenab) river crossing Sach Pass. Kishtwar is a prominent place on the way.

    • We operate 24 hours at International airport Delhi, so if you are coming from anywhere outside of Delhi or India, you can ask us for your hotel booking and airport assistance at Delhi.

  • Day 3Manali to Udaipur over Rohtang Pass, 138 Kms

We climb high to 3978 Meters Rohtang Pass which is 51 Kms from Manali. The entire road is quite good from Manali to Sissu tourist village which is on the other side of Rohtang Pass. Few kilometers downhill from Rohtang on the other side is off course still rough but the quaint surroundings compensate it fairly. If we cross the pass in May- June months, we move through a long and high snow gallery. Sissu is a beautiful village with artificial lake and a huge waterfall.

We stop at Sissu for tea and after one kilometer stop at Raja Ghepan temple just at the outskirt of Sissu village which is the foremost deity of Lahaul Valley and move ahead. The road is smooth and fine with almost very limited traffic. The small villages are seen on the way and the hardworking farmers producing best quality flowers, exotic vegetables and potato in the country. We stop at Tandi- the place of holy confluence of Chandra and Bhaga rivers creating Chenab which moves with us till Kishtwar. From Tandi Sangam (confluence), road to Udaipur gets narrow comparatively, moves through the middle of Pattan Valley villages till Udaipur. We fill up our fuel tanks at Tandi which is the only filling station on this route. Udaipur is a small town with some guest houses shops and bank facility. We cross Udaipur and camp few kilometers ahead on the flat and scenic banks of Chenab.

  • Day 4Udaipur camp to Killar in Pangi Valley. 80 Kms

We leave Udaipur Camp after breakfast and drive on Tandi- Sansari Nalla road. At the distance of about 20 Kms from our camp is the last cluster of villages surrounded by the main village Tindi on the left side of Chenab River. The journey of the day leads us in isolation on the rough roads. Road blocks, flash floods, and natural calamities are a part of daily life in this region, Purthi is the largest village and Chari is the most beautiful village-cum-transit camp on the way. Killar is head quarter of Pangi Valley which is scenic, less explored and heaven for the trekking enthusiasts.

  • Day 5Killar to Kishtwar. 114 Kms through cliffhanging creating it world’s most dangerous road.

We make an early move from Killar and after few kilometers we leave the road that moves to Sach Pass and continue driving straight. The drive is all along Chander Bhaga River (Chenab) which is visible in a deep and narrow gorge most of the way till Kishtwar. After few kilometers we reach the first village Luj which is a cluster of four small villages and we make our next stop at a police check post to register our vehicles on desolate roadside. After construction of Sach Pass, the frequency of vehicles has decreased drastically on this road. Moving through a thick forest we reach Sansari Nalla on the banks of Chander Bhaga River (Chenab). After Sansari Nalla, we face rocky steep ascent with dusty hairpin bends where our machines need to utilize really good power. The steep rocky ascent ends at the fist village of Jammu & Kashmir on this side named, Ishtiyari. We stop here for a tea break before we enter into about fifteen kilometers cliffhanging till another village Tiari. The road is carved from the middle of huge cliffs after blasting these and Chander Bhaga River flows extremely deep down in a gorge. The distance is less but the road is extremely challenging in all manners so we take remarkably much time to reach Tiari, where a cup of tea is nothing less than a reward. Gulabgarh is 20 kilometers from here which looks like a big town with hotels, restaurants, mosques and monasteries; we don’t stop here but continue to Kishtwar, another 70 Kms drive.

  • Day 6Kishtwar to Jammu. 215 Kms covering Doda, Udhampur and Chenani Nashri Tunnel.

Kishtwar is commonly known as the 'Land of Saffron, Sapphire and Shrines'. It has come into existence as a district in 2007 which shares borders with Himachal Pradesh, Doda and Anantnag districts of Jammu & Kashmir. The place is situated on the banks of River Chanderbhaga (Chenab) and has rich forests. The drive from Kishtwar to Jammu is a mixture of several experiences spread over Doda, Udhampur and a modern Chenani Nashri Tunnel of 9.28 Kms. Udhampur district is home to Goddess Vaishnu Devi, one of the most revered shrines for Hindus, and one of the most popular religious centers in India. We reach Jammu and check into hotel for overnight stay.
